Years 9 and 10

Finding Her Voice, Leading With Purpose

Years 9 and 10 are a pivotal stage in a girl's academic and personal journey, marked by significant change and growing independence. At Fahan, this stage is supported by two flagship programs - Lumina 9 in Year 9 and Fahan4Life in Year 10 - both designed to build the knowledge, wellbeing and interpersonal skills girls need as they take increasing ownership of their futures.

Alongside a broadening academic program and elective choices, girls are challenged and supported to build resilience, independence, compassion and leadership, ready for the more focused pathway planning of Years 11 and 12.

Lumina 9: Self, Lead, Give, Thrive

Year 9 girls take part in Lumina 9, a dedicated wellbeing and personal development program built on the themes of resilience, independence, interdependence, initiative, compassion and gratitude. Across the year, students work through four focus areas - Self, Lead, Give and Thrive - with sessions led by wellness expert Dr Rebecca Chabot, leadership expert Lauren Jauncey, and Fahan's own Lumina 9 teachers.

The program builds the interpersonal skills that matter most in a changing world - self-awareness, coaching and feedback, goal setting, and a strong sense of purpose - while giving every girl the chance to work towards her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's International Award.

All Year 9 students take part in a Tasmanian-based Outdoor Education program delivered in small groups of around 12 to 14 students. Alongside the Lumina 9 Outdoor Learning camp, each girl completes one themed expedition of her choice - Coast, Mountain, Alpine or River - taking her from Freycinet's coastline to the alpine wilderness of the Walls of Jerusalem, Ben Lomond's snowfields, or a Tasmanian river gorge by packraft.

These expeditions serve as the qualifying journey for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, building resilience, self-sufficiency and genuine teamwork along the way.

Lumina 9 community service and volunteering

Community, Compassion and Giving Back

Term 3 of Lumina 9 is dedicated to service and gratitude. Through Fahan's longstanding relationship with Variety - the Children's Charity, students fundraise and take part in initiatives such as the Monster Book Fair and Bikes for Kids. Many also become Digital Mentors through the Council of the Ageing (COTA), working alongside residents of Sandown Village.

These experiences build empathy, social awareness and a genuine sense of purpose - reinforcing that when girls feel good, they do good, for themselves and for others.

Year 10 Fahan4Life

In Year 10, students build on the foundations of the Lumina 9 program through Fahan4Life - a subject focused on deepening personal awareness, building on strengths and learning practical skills for the real world, alongside preparing students for future academic and career pathways.

As part of Fahan4Life, students build financial literacy and make links between lifestyle and career aspirations alongside the practicalities of successful attainment through goal setting - forming a natural segue into the first of many conversations around Year 11 and Year 12 subject selection. To support this planning, students undertake rigorous testing using the Morrisby Profiler, providing invaluable insight into their strengths and interests aligned to their aspirations.

Year 10 Fahan4Life is flexible and responsive, with student voice playing a key role in shaping content to ensure its relevance to each cohort. Other areas of focus include, but are not limited to, study skills, resume writing and interview skills.
