Senior girls who are participating in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award met His Royal Highness Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, at a special event at St Aloysius School. The 11 girls were delighted with the way The Earl made time to talk to them about their achievements in the Award. He took a particular interest in their choices for the skill component of Duke of Ed.
Katie, in Year 11, said that The Earl advised the Fahan girls that: “We should never give up, not only with Duke of Ed but with anything in life. He talked about his excitement about all the musical talent within our group of Duke of Ed girls. He also talked about how the Award was exactly how his father left it, and intended it to be, and how he would be proud of what it has become.”
Girls in Year 2 and Year 4 also had the opportunity to meet The Earl during his visit to the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens for the launch of the gardens’ bicentennial celebrations. The girls were impressed with The Earl’s relaxed and friendly approach: “I didn’t expect Prince Edward to give people high fives and be so chatty,” said Rosie from Year 4. “He asked me what my favourite thing to do at school was and I said Maths and reading,” said Coco from Year 2.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for our girls to meet HRH Prince Edward. They are to be commended for their outstanding representation of the School at both events,” said Principal, Tony Freeman.
