On Thursday 9 May The Mercury visited Fahan School for a story on Ikram Naqvi, founder of the Amroha International Society in India, which is one of the charities the Year 12 girls are raising funds for this year.
As part of the Year 12 curriculum the students organise a number of fundraising events to raise funds for a charity of their choice. Their goal is to raise $5,000 for the Amroha International Society.
The Amroha International Society provides a mechanism by which educational and health activities can be funded, carried out and monitored. This includes Scholarships for underprivileged students and Cataract Camps, where patients are screened and those requiring treatment are taken to a hospital in New Delhi for surgery. Following surgery, they are returned to Amroha. To date they have provided 226 cataract operations, given 228 free spectacles and provided free medicine to 2058 patients for minor eye problems.
“I am particularly pleased the girls have committed to help the poor people of my home town as my two daughters went to the Fahan School and my wife taught there for a long time. Their commitment to raise money for the Society will help many cataract operations and scholarships. I thank the girls for caring,” Mr Naqvi said.
The charity is significant to the Year 12 girls as Ikram’s wife, Jane, was one of Fahan’s wonderful teachers who taught at the School for 21 years. The opportunity to support Ikram Naqvi’s charity was one the girls could not overlook, not only because of their admiration for Jane Naqvi, but also because the Amroha International Society is a charity that is striving to achieve greater education and health services for people from Amroha and, like Fahan, has a strong bond within its community.
“We are very proud to support the Amroha International Society and we know that everything we contribute to this charity will make a significant difference,” Year 12 student, Maria Daglas said.
Ikram presented the girls with copies of his autobiography to assist in their fundraising efforts. This can be purchased for $15 at the School reception.
